Update for the Quar.

As I said in my last blog update, I've added more stuff to my quar.  Some of these were new vehicles.  I purchased a couple more of the Trucks of Yesteryear line off of Ebay. The first truck I made into an ambulance. This is a 1919 Walker Electric Truck. It seemed to fit the look quite nicely. I gave it a repaint to match my Atkinson steam wagon and printed out a couple Red Cross symbols. I just need to make up a couple medic figures to go with it and its off to the field hospital.

The second truck I picked up is a 1922 Foden C-Type Steam Wagon. This truck I didn't paint, as I liked the color of the model. I did give it a coat of matt sealer to make it not so shiny. Unfortunately the coat clouded over on the plastic parts. However it gave it a dirty, gritty look to it, so I figured it was better to leave it alone. The one nice thing about this truck is the canvas canopy is removable. So I can put troops or supplies in the back depending on the scenario.

One of the things I came up with for our games were blood markers. I took red felt, cut them in circles and then cut irregular shapes out of them. We use these to signify when someone is "Out of Action"  or "Killed". When a figure is out of action, we place the figure on top of the blood. If the figure was killed, we place the blood on top.  Or if its a gory death.... Well we just throw a lot of them around......

We have also been getting terrain together for our games. JoAnnes had some neat "Pot Toppers" which worked well for overgrown termite mounds.

I also made a number of bases from some hex blanks I had. In JoAnnes floral department they had some small pine cones that I turned into a cactus like plant. Since we are redoing the new house, I have tons of spackle and joint compound laying around. I covered each hex with stucco texture. Added a few rocks here or there and painted them.

I added some flock then attached the cones. I tried using a new glue I had only used on fabric before. It is called Tacky glue, made by Aleene's. I have to say it worked amazingly well. It certainly works as the name implies. Its very tacky. It almost feels like its partially cured as well. I'm not sure if that is what causes the tackiness or not. But I like how it worked. I globbed some on the base of the cone, and stuck it to the base.  It didn't move from where I placed it. In the past I know using elmers glue, I would have had to prop it in place to keep it from falling over. The tacky glue held every one I put down. No muss, no fuss.

I recently made a new house as well. But I will need to get some pictures to  throw up. But here are some more pics from our last game.

The 19th gets some wheels

Hi Folks,

As I was puttering along with all my projects I happened across some items on Ebay I couldn't pass up. I'm always looking for items I can use for scenarios or terrain. So I did a search on ebay for 28mm vehicles and came across this.

This is a c1918 Atkinson steam wagon. It was put out by Matchbox in its Trucks of Yesteryear line. I happened to pick one up on ebay for $7. Though most on there are up around $15. This particular listing had it scaled at 1/43. Which should be perfect for 28mm. However when I got it, it was clearly 1/72 or 20mm. Now luckily the Quar are about 22mm. So they actually fit in scale fairly good.

So after throwing some fresh paint on it, this is what I ended up with.

And just for my friend Tom and his Fidwog Fusiliers.

I may throw a couple of my unit flags on the side.I'm not sure just yet. Whats neat is this particular cab style is also offered with other bodies. I have seen flatbeds with various cargo on them. I'll have to see what I can find.

Hope you like,

Some new Quar

Hi Folks,

I recently picked up some new units for my Quar. I decided to pick up a couple Royalist that I can have available for a game. I also picked up a couple more Crusaders that I intend to load up as Veteran / Assault troops.

So enough yapping on to the pics.....

First up is the Upper Barro House Guard. The house guards are rarely far from the royal family. But when needed they fall out to provide support to the troops. They have a distinctive Green and Tan uniform based on the royal colors.

Next is the Upper Barro Royal Marines. A major part of Upper Barros history is steeped in nautical lore. Generations have fished the kelp beds off of the Barro shores. And the Royal Navy protected the rich kelp beds from poachers. Now the Royal Navy works to keep open the flow of supplies to the royal family held up on their island fortress of the southeastern shore of Upper Barro.

And here they are together on patrol.

I also threw together an objective marker for giggles. I used bits from the Quar accessory pack along with some crates I had laying around. You always need something to fight over.

As always I have a blast when I paint these figures. The detail on the models are fantastic, and the open environment in the game itself lets you really play with ideas and background stories.

More to come,
Scott

The 19th Borderers grows.....

Hi Folks,

As you know I received a batch of Quar for my birthday. After painting those I needed some more, so.... I ordered some recruits. I purchased the Crusader Command pack, Light MG team as well as the Shotgun team and Mortar team. I have to say I am amazed at the bits of detail on these models. Everywhere you look on them there is something more to find. One of the models I received was the Crusader cook. At the time he wasn't listed on the Zombiesmith site so I was a little surprised when he arrived. Not that I was disappointed, as it is a great figure.

Just a little side note on these figures. These are the first figures I have exclusively done with the "Magic Wash" or "Dip". I have used ink washes before but usually only for 15mm or smaller. The thought of doing larger figures always kind of intimidated me.

So I had been reading up on the various recipes and figured I would give it a try for 28mm. I created a batch of wash using a 1-4 ratio. Meaning, 1 part Future to 4 parts water. I actually created a large batch of the "base" and then parceled it out to smaller containers to try different colors in. The wash I used for these was a black ink base I made from inks I had sitting around. Basically I slowly added black ink and stirred until the wash was a good opaque color.

The figures were block painted in their primary colors. I have Vallejo paints for my WW2 stuff so I used them for these as well. For the most part they are all only 5 colors not including skin and details. I then either dipped or brushed on the wash and let sit to dry. I did notice the brushed on wash didn't "run" as well as the dipped. But the effect is basically the same. Once dry they were sprayed with Krylon Matt spray and based.

So on to the pics.....

Early Birthday to me....

So as you know I have been working on my 15mm Quar figures. Well my friend Tom surprised me with an early birthday present. He picked up for me the "Songs of our Ancestors" rulebook from Zombiesmith along with a unit of Crusaders in 28mm. Of course once I started painting the mini's I had to have more, so I promptly ordered reinforcements....

I had been playing with some fluff and had come up with a name for my unit. So without due allow me to introduce members of the 19th Volunteer Cawtrad "The Upper Barro Borderers".

Ryflers Beuno and Cerrag on patrol.

Yawdryl Trywent.

And never far behind is Ryfler Tabor with his cask of Bogen Barrel Single Malt Scotch.

I hope you like.

Trash to something......

As gamers we are always looking for things we can turn into tabletop terrain. It just so happened I found some at work. As I was leaving, my friend Tom picked up some clear plastic forms that were laying in the trash. And as our usual response said "we can make something out of that...."

Tom recently picked up some 15mm Hammers Slammers from Old Crow and GZG. So we have been talking about ideas for terrain. So yesterday I grabbed one and threw some paint on it.

Here is the plastic form as we found it.
I trimmed away the extra crap around the edge and cut off a area that had the plastic rating symbol pressed into it. I sprayed the whole thing black with a can of Krylon Fusion and let dry. I have a bunch of vinyl lying for my vinyl cutter, so I cut thin strips to be used as windows. Painters tape or masking tape would work as well.

I placed them around the form where I thought windows would be. I then sprayed the whole thing with Krylon Stone Texture paint. Just a note, we are used to spraying from 8 to 12" from the target. It works much better if you are 12 to 16" with the stone paint. Once dry I pulled the vinyl off, and the black paint showed through. Here is the finished product.

I finished with some flock and static grass. I then took some pastel chalks I have lying around and did a hard highlite on the edges of the building. I also used some to darkened the ground that shows through the flock. It was quick and dirty, but I think it looks cool. On the next one I will use a bunch of greeblies. Probably a radar dish or something.

Hope you like it.

15mm Quar.

I have to say, ever since the Quar came out I have been itching to paint up some. They remind me of characters from underground comics from the 60's. Primarily those by Vaughn Bode.

However my gaming space has shrunk, so I am forced to look at smaller scales. So when Zombiesmith announced they were releasing the Quar in 15mm, I had to jump on them. I am waiting for the rulebook and some more figures. But, I painted up my first batch. Here are some pics of what I've done.

The first batch I have painted up into 2 different sections. One in a khaki uniform and the other in a feldgrau. I haven't worked on fluff for them yet. But once I read the rulebook I can figure that out.

Here are the rest of the pics....

These have been a blast to paint, and I cant wait for the rest to show.

See ya.
